Summary of the Lesson

English Summary: The lesson “Tea from Assam” is a travelogue that describes the beautiful tea gardens of Assam. Pranjol, a young Assamese boy, invites his friend Rajvir to his home in Assam during the summer vacation. On the way, Rajvir is fascinated by the vast tea plantations and the tea-picking women. He tells Pranjol about the legends regarding the origin of tea – one Chinese and one Indian. The Chinese legend speaks of a Chinese emperor who discovered tea when a few leaves accidentally fell into boiling water. The Indian legend tells about a Buddhist monk, Bodhidharma, who chewed tea leaves to stay awake during meditation. Upon reaching Assam, they are welcomed by Pranjol’s father who works as a manager of a tea garden. The lesson highlights the rich tea culture of Assam, which produces more than half of India’s tea.
