Summary
The story “God Sees the Truth but Waits” by Leo Tolstoy is about a merchant named Ivan who is wrongly convicted of murder and sent to Siberia. Before marriage, Ivan used to drink heavily, but after marriage he reformed. One day, while travelling to a fair, his wife had a bad dream warning him not to go, but he ignored it. He stayed at an inn and left early next morning. Later, a merchant was found murdered, and the police found a blood-stained knife in Ivan’s bag. Despite his innocence, he was flogged and sent to prison in Siberia. In prison, he became humble and respected by everyone. After many years, a new convict named Makar Semyonich arrived. Ivan discovered that Makar was the real murderer. Makar tried to escape by digging a tunnel, but Ivan did not reveal his secret to the jailer. Makar repented and confessed, asking for forgiveness. Ivan forgave him and died peacefully. The story teaches that God sees the truth and justice prevails in the end.
