Summary of the Poem

She made even smaller cakes, but each time she found them too large to give. Finally, she refused to give any cake. Angry at her greed and selfishness, Saint Peter turned her into a woodpecker. The lady baked a little cake, but thought it too large to give away. She made another smaller cake but found it also too big. She said the cakes were too large to give to others. Saint Peter grew angry and punished her by turning her into a woodpecker. He said she was ungrateful and selfish and did not deserve a comfortable human life. Now the woodpecker must bore hard, dry wood to get food. Only her red cap remained; her other clothes were burnt away. The moral of the story is that we should be grateful and help others in need.
