Coorg, also known as Kodagu, is the smallest district of Karnataka, nestled in the hills of the Western Ghats. It is a land of breathtaking natural beauty, covered with evergreen rainforests, rolling hills, coffee plantations, and spice gardens. The river Kaveri originates here, adding to the region’s charm. Coorg is famous for its heavy monsoon rains, which often keep visitors away, but the best time to visit is from September to March.

The people of Coorg are known as Kodavas, a fiercely independent and brave community. According to legend, the Kodavas are descendants of Greek soldiers from Alexander the Great’s army. As one story goes, a part of Alexander’s army moved south along the coast and could not return home, so they settled in Coorg. They married local women and their unique culture – martial traditions, wedding customs, and religious rites – still shows Greek or Arabic influences. The long black coat with an embroidered waist-belt, called the ‘kuppia’, resembles the Arab ‘kuffia’, supporting the theory of Arab origin.
