Short Summary

The story is about a beautiful statue of a prince covered in gold and jewels. When alive, the prince lived in comfort and never knew sorrow, so people called him the Happy Prince. But after death, as a statue high above the city, he sees all the poverty, hunger, and misery around him. He feels deep sorrow. A swallow, on its way to Egypt, takes shelter at the prince’s feet. The prince asks the swallow to help the poor by taking the ruby from his sword, the sapphires from his eyes, and the gold leaf from his body. The swallow delivers these gifts to those in need. Eventually, the swallow dies of cold beside the prince, and the prince’s leaden heart breaks. God sends an angel to bring the two most precious things in the city – the dead swallow and the broken heart – to heaven, where they will live forever.
