1. What does the word Majuli mean? Write briefly about the origin of Majuli.
Ans: The word ‘Majuli’ is derived from ‘Majoli’, which means a land situated between two parallel rivers. Originally, it was a long and narrow strip of land between the Brahmaputra in the north and the Burhidihing in the south. Due to frequent earthquakes between 1661 and 1696 and a devastating flood in 1750, the Brahmaputra split into two channels. As a result, the landmass was separated and formed the island of Majuli.
